Definition & Cause:
AIDS stands for Acquired  Immune Deficiency Syndrome & it is a medical condition.AIDS is caused by HIV.HIV is a virus that gradually attacks immune system cells.As HIV progressively damages these cells,the body becomes more vulnerable to infections,which it will have difficulty in fighting off.It is at the point of very advanced HIV infection that a person is said to have AIDS.It can be years before HIV has damaged the immune system enough for AIDs to develop.There is still no cure for AIDs.The only way to stay safe is to be aware of how HIV is transmitted & how to prevent HIV infection.Although there is no cure for AIDs,HIV infection can be prevented & those with HIV can take antiretroviral drugs to delay the onset of AIDs.
 What Are Opportunistic Infections?
People with advanced HIV infection are vulnerable to infections & malignancies that are called opportunistic infections because they take advantage of the opportunity offered by weakened immune system.Opportunistic infections related to HIV,AIDs  include pneumocystis,carinii pneumonia,tuberculosis,candida(yeast)infection of the mouth,.throat,Shingles,cytomegalovirus retinitis and kaposi.
Symptoms of AIDs & HIV infection-
 It can take as short as a year to as long as 10-15 years to go from being infected with HIV to  "full-blown" AIDS.
Appearance of one or more purple spots on the surface of the skin,inside the mouth,anus or nasal passages.
Whitish coating on the tongue,throat or vagina.
Forgetfulness,confusion & o
Extreme Fatigue.
Appearance of swollen or tender glands in the neck,armpits or groin,for no apparent reason,lasting for more than four weeks.
Unexplained shortness of breath frequently accompanied by a dry cough,not due to allergies or smoking.
Persistant diarrhea.
Intermittent high fever or soaking night sweats of unknown origin.
A marked change in an illness pattern,either in frequency,severity,or length of sickness.
